EMSella Q&A

What is EMSella?

EMSella is a non-invasive treatment for urinary incontinence, particularly stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Stress urinary incontinence is a chronic condition that occurs when you experience urine leakage because of pressure on the bladder and urethra. This causes the sphincter muscles to open, allowing urine to leak through.

If you have stress urinary incontinence, exercise, sneezing, coughing, and laughing can cause your bladder to leak urine.

What other types of urinary incontinence does EMSella treat?

While EMSella commonly treats stress urinary incontinence, it’s also an effective treatment for:

Urge incontinence

Urge incontinence occurs when you have a sudden, intense urge to urinate. In some cases, this urge may be too strong to ignore, leaving you prone to accidents if you aren’t near a restroom.

Mixed incontinence

Having urge incontinence means your type of urinary incontinence is a combination of SUI and urge incontinence.

How does EMSella work?

EMSella is an entirely non-surgical treatment that strengthens your pelvic floor muscles with electromagnetic energy. In a single session, EMSella delivers targeted energy to induce thousands of pelvic floor muscle contractions. This instantly strengthens your pelvic floor muscles to better control urinary leakage.

Does EMSella hurt?

While EMSella doesn’t hurt, you may experience a tingling sensation in your pelvic floor during treatment. This happens because EMSella is actively stimulating your pelvic floor muscles and forcing them to contract at a much higher rate than they normally would.

Because the treatment is non-invasive in nature, you can resume your normal activities immediately after the procedure.

How many EMSella treatments will I need?

The providers at Stellar Skin and Laser can administer EMSella treatments in as little as 30 minutes. Your provider tailors your treatment to meet your specific needs. Some people need more treatments than others to prevent bladder leakage.

In many cases, a single treatment is enough to effectively strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and prevent bladder leakage. However, six sessions, administered twice a week, is the standard number of treatments to treat urinary incontinence.

Most individuals start to see visible improvements in their urinary incontinence within just a few weeks of their first treatment.
